what do you know about black history month?

Ok I know i just blogged by as soon as i got off of here I came across this really interesting video on Facebook from one of my friends. yea Facebook i know..

the title of the clip is, "what do you know about black history month?"

After seeing this clip i was like, wow. They really think like that? They all came up with the same African American Icons too. I just thought it was interesting seeing as though it's not only Black History month but how it tied in with what we discussed in class. The "stereotypes" of the African Americans when it comes to many things. When Diane told us about her cousin getting 10-25 years in jail for murdering someone that broke into their house, who was going to kill them too seeing as though the intruder had a gun too. Then when professor G told the story of her brother in law committing the same charge but got away with it because both her brother in law and the intruder were African American. Whereas in Diane's case, her cousin was African American and the intruder was white. Now you tell me something isn't right!

Also, when asked in the clip, "how do you celebrate how do you celebrate black history month?" some replied with things like, "i listen to jay-z," and "we like to eat fried chicken and grape-juice." really!?? That just leads me to think. "well damn what do they think about Mexicans?"

like we said in class, it's not everybody as a whole. just the selected few i guess you could say.. stereotypes are very common and with everything being said and being done just makes the society we live in even more unjust and ignorant..

  1. This was a really great video!! It amazes me that people in this video didn't even realize that their comments were racist. The continuous stereotypes that people face are overwhelming. We don't all sit around and drink grape juice and eat fried chicken, of yell "HEY girl!!", or speak in what ever language they were trying to imitate. It's just upsetting to think that this is how people see blacks. Very interesting post, it definitely gets your mind rolling.

  2. Oh my goodness! This was a great video. Thanks for posting. Those people sounded so stupid and ignorant. What's sad is that they don't even realize what they are saying is wrong. It's people like them who make whites seem like bad, ignorant people.

  3. Loved the video clip! On some of the questions I also had to ask myself for an answer. Like 'how do you celebrate black history month?' I never actually thought about that before. What I thought was completely shocking was how they didn't even realize their comments were racist! I also found their imitations to be highly disrespectful and just another stereotype.

  4. First of all Great Post on how racist people can be even in our generation!
So I think coloring that dude's face with paint to make him look like he was black-skinned kind of defeated the purpose of proving how racist others are; all through the video I thought are they really doing black-face right now!? Not cool man! The rest of the individuals in this clip were super ignorant, that is all I will say...

  5. That is a great clip and yeah I would love to see one about Mexican. That is pretty sad that they have no idea what Black history month is.

  6. What a great video clip! I cannot believe how ignorant those people were! I was amazed about all of the racist comments that were said. I'm sad to think about how people don't even realize how racist they're behaving and how they can't name a historical black figure besides Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thanks for posting! - and yes, it would be interesting to see something about Mexicans. :)

  7. Great video! My first thought was that it is crazy to see how university students have no clue when black history month is or historical figures. I guess it depends on the kind of elementary, middle, and high school they went to. I went to half black half hispanic schools all my life where every year they made a big emphasis on black history month. I found these students very ignorant and well I guess this proves the lack of knowledge some schools have about black history month

  8. Woooooooow! <----- That's exactly what I kept saying throughout the whole video. I must admit, I might not be specialized in African American history but some of these responses are extremely saddening especially coming from what looks like current students. You make a good point about what would be the outcome for inquiring about Hispanic Heritage Month or just Mexicans in general. Great video, thanks for sharing. I'll probably re-post it on FB lol
